Effects of low-energy laser irradiation on the healing of mandibular fracture in rats

Abstract
Until recently there has been controversy as to whether lowenergy laser irradiation causes biostimulation.
The purpose of this study was to observe histopathologically the effects of lowenergy GaAIAS laser(Bloth erapy Dental Laser 3DL) irradiation on the healing of mandibular fracture in rats.
Experimental fracutres were placed on right mandibular bodies of :42 SpragueDawley male rats weighing about 240 grams under ether anesthesia. 21 r~ is were irradiated 1 minute daily for up to 3 weeks, and the other 21 rats were served as control group. All the animals were sacrificed on the 3rd day, 7th day, 10th day, 2nd week, 3rd week, 4th week and 5th week after fracture.
The sections were stained with hematoxylineosin and Masson trichrome for ordinary light microscopy.
Histopathologic study revealed the following favorable effects of lowenergy GaAIAS laser irradiation:
1. Inflammatory phase disappeared early.
2. Increased capillary formation endowed the fracture healing.
3. Fibrosis and ossification were accelerated.
4. Osteoblastic activity was enhanced.
5. Mineralization process was expedited.
6. Healing process appeared about 7 days earlier than the control groups.
